Road America Track History
Located in the rolling hills of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Road America is a beloved motorsports facility that has been thrilling race fans for decades. With its winding 4.048-mile road course and 14 turns, this track is a playground for high-octane racing action.
Road America was founded way back in 1955 by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and was originally called the Elkhart Lake Road Racing Circuit. It was built on a former cow pasture and featured a 3.3-mile road course with 10 turns. Over the years, the track has undergone numerous renovations and upgrades, including the addition of four new turns in the 1990s, turning it into the challenging and technical track we know and love today.
In the early days, Road America was a haven for all sorts of motorsports events, including sports car races, motorcycle races, and even drag racing. But it wasn't until the 1960s and 1970s that the track really hit its stride, becoming a popular destination for open-wheel racing and hosting events for the USAC Championship Car series.
Fast forward to the present day, and Road America is still a major player on the motorsports scene. It's played host to a variety of racing series over the years, including the IMSA GT Championship, the CART/Champ Car World Series, and the American Le Mans Series. And today, it continues to be a go-to spot for events like the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship, and the SCCA National Championship Runoffs.
But it's not just the impressive lineup of racing events that has made Road America a fan favorite. Over the years, this track has seen its fair share of drama and excitement, with unforgettable finishes like the 1989 CART race where Michael Andretti passed Bobby Rahal on the final lap to take the win. And let's not forget the numerous record-breaking performances that have gone down at Road America, like Zanardi's fastest lap in 1998.
In short, Road America is a place where racing dreams come true. So if you're a fan of fast cars and high-stakes competition, you won't want to miss out on all the action at this beloved motorsports facility.
